Beyond the Registration Push: Why I Wrote a Content Marketing Guide for Race Directors
I’d contend that most race directors know how to promote a race.
However, far fewer know how to build a brand.
Every year I see race directors pour enormous amounts of energy into registration announcements, sponsor posts, deadline reminders, and race-week updates. Then for many, almost as quickly as the finish line is packed away, the content stops.
The race disappears from social media.
The website sits unchanged for months.
Momentum fades.
Then, months before the race begins again next year, the process starts all over again.
I keep thinking there has to be a better way.
I definitely don't see the problem as a lack of effort. It’s just that few have a year-round content marketing strategy. That’s exactly why I believe content marketing for race directors deserves far more attention than it gets.
Why Race Directors Need More Than Race Promotion
As a race director, I know you’re juggling a lot of critical components for your race, from permits to insurance to volunteers and so much more.
Yes, social media is important, but registration is also a big deal. Email marketing is important. So is all of the other promotional work you’re doing to get your race the media attention it deserves.
But when they’re disconnected and every season begins from scratch, that’s where you lose momentum.
If you go dormant on social media within a week or so from when your race is over, you’re missing out.
Content marketing changes that.
Instead of simply asking people to register, it builds a library of stories that helps future riders discover your event long before registration even opens.
How Content Marketing Builds Year-Round Visibility for Bike Races
That library of content includes:
Course previews.
Volunteer stories.
Local businesses.
Community partnerships.
Training advice.
Race history.
Photography.
Video.
Athlete features.
When you’re posting and publishing content year-round, each piece becomes another reason someone discovers your event. Not only that, but it makes you more discoverable.
Every Bike Race Already Has Stories Worth Telling
One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is: “We don’t have enough content.”
I don’t believe that’s true. And I'm not even talking about all the race-day content you already have.
Every race is surrounded by stories. It’s just that many races simply haven’t built a system for capturing them.
Once you start looking through the lens of a publisher or a content creator instead of an event promoter, ideas begin appearing everywhere.
Why I Created Beyond the Registration Push
I wrote Beyond the Registration Push because I wanted race directors to have a practical starting point.
Don’t worry, this is not another marketing theory book. As much as I love and live in academia, theory is not what is needed right now.
Also, this is not another collection of trendy social media hacks. Sure, there are helpful trends and fads that come and go and are worth paying attention to. I’m not focused on that. Besides, as soon as I finished writing it, there were probably 4-5 social media fads that have stopped working.
This is just a straightforward guide to thinking differently about content.
I believe (because I’ve seen) that the most successful races aren’t simply promoted well. They’re remembered, talked about, and shared ... over and over again.
I'm also not talking about hype. If you know me, I'm not much of a hype person.
Content plays an enormous role in shaping people’s perception of your race, both before and after. That’s why you need a content plan.
